The Porch is a new restaurant located in the heart of Oakland at Schenley Plaza. There is a no-fuss feel to the place, when you walk in you’re handed a menu and then you place your order at the counter. There’s a large bar surrounding the wood-fired pizza oven where you can get wine by the glass or a local draft beer.
There is also an impressive outdoor bar and seating area complete with a fireplace that will surely be a popular drinking spot after class for Pitt students once the weather gets warm. Basically, I like the feel of this place, it’s relaxed, bright, and welcoming.
I decided to order the Chicken Roti sandwich with mixed greens for my lunch, which had sliced pear, whole grain mustard aioli, swiss cheese, and arugula on toasted bread. I wasn’t crazy about the mixed greens salad, it was simply some mixed greens tossed with a light olive oil dressing.
I think the Porch could easily up the ante on the salad by just upgrading the dressing to a balsamic vinaigrette and maybe a few slices of red onion or cucumber. But mixed greens aside, I really loved my toasted chicken sandwich. The pear was sliced super thin, the bread was buttery and toasted, and it was a sandwich that was filling enough to get you through the rest of the day.
I’ll definitely be back to the Porch for a sandwich, and I’d like to try their homemade pizzas, too. In the summertime, the patio will be a great spot to hang out with friends and relax in the sunshine. There is also a pick-up window at the Porch for students passing through. If you’re in Oakland, be sure to stop in for some lunch, a glass of wine, or a homemade pizza.
